It continued to hold currency in Sicilian society because young rural women still rarely appeared in public and had little opportunity to mix with unmarried men. While Melodia held Franca Viola, her father was frantically collaborating with the carabinieri, or local police, pretending to come to terms with the kidnappers while in reality the police were organizing a dramatic rescue mission. Viola's father pretended to come to terms with the kidnappers while actually collaborating with the Carabinieri police in preparing a successful dragnet operation. She was also bucking tradition and in doing so, attracted worldwide attention and crowds flocked to debates about the trial, which was covered even by The New York Times. Rejected suitors or unwanted admirers would kidnap the object of their affection then rape her.

There are a few things i'd like to add. Article 544, allowing a rapist to marry his victim for reparation, was finally repealed in 1981. Still, very gripping and plain good. In Sicily, there was a romantic practice called La Fuitina. He had hoped to force her to marry him using the local Sicilian law of 'matrimonio riparatore', Article 544 of the Italian criminal code, where a rapist would be forgiven of his crime if he married his victim in an effort to restore her 'damaged' honour and that of her family.
